Organizational Behavior Management applies behavior analysis to employee performance and the conditions that support it. A project might examine missed procedures, improve a training process or help managers give useful feedback. The work gives a developing behavior analyst practice in assessment, intervention design and evaluation.
The BASN provides that experience online, with organizational clients and BCBA supervision included. Understanding how it fits certification and state law starts with the client, the proposed activities and the supervision arrangement.
Organizational clients belong in behavior-analytic fieldwork
The BACB recognizes OBM as an area of behavior analysis and recognizes organizations as clients. Its fieldwork guidance connects qualifying activities to actual client needs.
At The BASN, you work on a defined organizational problem with a BCBA supervisor. For example, our project with The Homework Monitors addressed tutor preparation, documentation and manager feedback. The project involved a real contracted organization, and its published results describe the measures used in that work.
This experience can extend fieldwork you already receive in a clinic. You learn to ask what people need to do, what makes that performance easier or harder, and whether a proposed change is helping.
How state licensure provisions apply to OBM
The BACB sets certification and fieldwork standards. States govern the practice of behavior analysis within their jurisdictions. Several states expressly provide exemptions for qualifying organizational services.
Montana’s §37-17-404 names OBM consultants working with organizations. Alabama’s Rule 580-5-30B-.02 includes behavior analysts working with nonpatient clients, including OBM practitioners.
Texas §506.059, Washington RCW 18.380.030, North Carolina G.S. 90-745 and Illinois 225 ILCS 6/20 describe exemptions for general behavior analysis services that benefit organizations and do not involve direct services to individuals.
The wording matters. An organizational contract alone does not settle which provision applies to every activity. The review needs to consider the services being delivered and the locations involved, including the trainee, supervisor and client. These state examples explain specific provisions; each fieldwork arrangement needs the requirements that apply to it.
A Virginia practice serving trainees nationwide
The BASN coordinates its organizational projects and supervision through our Virginia practice. I am a Virginia-licensed BCBA and oversee the firm’s 20 BCBA supervisors. Trainees participate online across the United States.
Enrollment asks for your state, certification pathway and existing fieldwork arrangements. Our Virginia base describes how the practice is organized. Applicable requirements also depend on where the people involved are located and what services they perform.
Virginia Code §54.1-2957.17 includes provisions for students in defined educational programs and for people completing supervised experience toward certification or licensure. The experiential-training provision requires supervision by a licensed behavior analyst approved by the BACB to supervise, accurate representation of the trainee’s role, and no more than five years since the training began.
Client work, observation and supervision online
The BACB permits remote fieldwork supervision. Its BCBA Handbook and BCaBA Handbook describe observation through live or recorded video and real-time supervision for discussion and feedback. The trainee and supervisor establish the required client relationship, and clients know about and agree to the remote activities.
At The BASN, client observation takes place live online with your BCBA supervisor present. Each trainee’s work and observation are documented individually. Your supervisor reviews your project decisions and completed work with you.
The Standard program follows the 2027 Supervised Fieldwork requirements for BCBA and BCaBA trainees. Each $249 calendar-month package provides exactly 40 unrestricted OBM hours, including 60 minutes of individual supervision and 60 minutes of mandatory group supervision. Groups are limited to 10 student analysts.
